"Towards sustainable partnerships between universities and
society groups"

9-11 june 2004, Brasov, Romania

A science shop is a unit that provides independent research support in response to concerns experienced by civil society. Eight of these centers were established at Romanian universities, with support from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in two stages: four since 1998 and four starting with 2002. Until now, Romanian Science Shops focused on environmental issues and are, thus, called InterMediu. A NGO association, INTERMEDIUNET ROMANIA, gathering persons involved in Romanian Science Shops was founded in 2003.
Through concrete projects, Science Shops at universities stimulate:
• problem based learning for students;
• the tackling of local problems with local knowledge.
This conference will show achievements and challenges for the future, like widening the fields of work to other socially relevant disciplines and enlarging the number of science shops.
We are looking forward to meet you at our conference and hope to exchange many ideas and experiences together.

Sincerely yours,
Carmen TEODOSIU and Henk MULDER
